DIY Concrete Patio: Complete Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Can You Really DIY a Concrete Patio?
Yes! A basic 10x10 or 12x12 patio is a manageable DIY project if you're prepared, have helpers, and don't rush. This guide walks you through every step.
Time needed: 2-3 days (1 day prep, 1 day pour, 1 day cleanup/curing start)

Step 1: Plan and Prepare (Day Before)
Choose Location
- Check for underground utilities (call 811)
- Plan for water drainage (1/8" slope per foot away from house)
- Consider sun exposure and views
- Check local building codes/permits

Step 2: Excavate and Grade
Dig down: You need 4" concrete + 4-6" gravel base + form height. For a 4" slab with 4" gravel, dig about 8-9" deep.
Grade for drainage: The finished surface should slope away from your house at 1/8" per foot minimum. If your patio is 10 feet from the house, the far edge should be 1.25" lower.
Compact the soil: Rent a plate compactor or use a hand tamper. Loose soil = cracked concrete later.
Step 3: Add Gravel Base
- Spread 4-6 inches of gravel (crushed limestone or road base works best)
- Rake level, maintaining your drainage slope
- Compact thoroughly—this is crucial
- Add more gravel if needed after compacting
- Final surface should be 4-5" below your planned concrete surface
Step 4: Build Forms
- Set stakes every 2-3 feet around perimeter
- Attach 2x4s to stakes (use screws, not nails)
- Check level across forms, maintaining drainage slope
- Brace corners well—wet concrete pushes hard
- Apply form release oil (or cooking spray) for easy removal
Pro tip: Top of forms = top of finished concrete. Double-check your heights.
Step 5: Add Reinforcement
- Lay wire mesh or rebar grid on chairs/supports
- Reinforcement should be in the lower third of slab
- Overlap mesh sections by one square
- Keep reinforcement 2" from edges
Step 6: Pour Day—The Big Event
Before You Start
- Check weather (no rain, not too hot or cold)
- Have all tools ready and accessible
- Brief your helpers on their roles
- Dampen gravel base (but no puddles)
- Start early—you'll need daylight
Mixing (if using bags)
- Mix one batch at a time
- Follow water ratio exactly—don't add extra
- Consistency should be like thick oatmeal
- Have someone mixing while others pour/spread
Pouring
- Start in corner farthest from access
- Dump concrete into forms, don't throw it
- Use shovel or rake to spread roughly level
- Work concrete around reinforcement (but don't push mesh down)
- Keep pouring until forms are full
Step 7: Screed
Screeding levels the concrete to the top of forms:
- Use a straight 2x4 longer than your form width
- Two people, one on each end
- Pull screed board across surface in sawing motion
- Keep both ends on the forms
- Fill low spots, remove high spots
- Make multiple passes until level
Step 8: Float
Floating brings cream to surface and removes air:
- Use bull float immediately after screeding
- Push away from you, pull back with float lifted slightly
- Overlap passes by half
- Surface should be smooth with slight wet sheen
Step 9: Wait for Bleed Water
This step is critical. Water will rise to the surface (bleed water). DO NOT work the surface until all bleed water is gone and the sheen disappears. This can take 30 minutes to several hours depending on conditions.
Working wet concrete traps water and creates a weak, dusty surface.
Step 10: Edge
- Run edging tool along all form edges
- Creates rounded edge that resists chipping
- Work tool back and forth with light pressure
- Keep tool flat against forms
Step 11: Cut Control Joints
Control joints prevent random cracking:
- Cut joints every 8-10 feet (or slab thickness x 24-30)
- Depth should be 1/4 of slab thickness
- Use a groover tool while concrete is still workable
- Joints tell concrete where to crack (in the joint, not randomly)
Step 12: Final Finish
Broom finish (most common):
- Wait until surface is firm but still damp
- Drag broom across in straight lines
- Creates non-slip texture
- Always drag away from house (water drainage)
Step 13: Cure
- Cover with plastic sheeting OR spray with curing compound
- Keep moist for at least 7 days
- Remove forms after 24-48 hours
- No walking for 24 hours, normal use after 7 days
- No heavy loads for 28 days
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Adding too much water: Makes finishing easier but concrete weaker
- Finishing too early: Working bleed water into surface = weak, dusty finish
- Not enough helpers: You can't do a 100+ sq ft pour alone
- Poor base prep: Inadequate gravel or compaction = cracks
- Skipping control joints: Concrete will crack—control joints tell it where
- Wrong timing: Too hot (dries fast), too cold (won't cure), rain (disaster)
