The difference between concrete that holds up for decades and concrete that cracks within a few years usually comes down to how you mixed it. Not the brand. Not the weather. The mixing.

First Things First: Concrete ≠ Cement
Quick clarification because I hear this all the time — concrete and cement aren't the same thing.
Cement is just one ingredient. It's the grey powder that acts as the glue. Concrete is what you get when you mix cement with sand, gravel, and water.
When you grab an 80-pound bag from Home Depot or Lowe's, you're getting everything pre-blended except the water. The cement, sand, and gravel are already measured out. Your job is to add the right amount of water and mix it properly.
That's where people mess up.
Why Water Matters More Than Anything Else
Here's what nobody tells beginners: the amount of water you add basically determines how strong your concrete will be.
There's a technical term for this — the water-to-cement ratio. Contractors obsess over it. Here's the short version:

Don't do it.
The Magic Number: 3 Quarts per 80-Pound Bag
For a standard 80-pound bag (Quikrete, Sakrete, whatever), you need roughly 3 quarts of water. That's about 6 pounds.
But here's the trick that'll save you: start with 2/3 of that amount.
Dump in about 2 quarts first. Mix it up. See how it looks. Then add more water a cup at a time until you get the right consistency.
Why? Because you can always add water. You can't take it out.
I've seen guys dump in too much water, panic, and try to fix it by throwing in half another bag of dry mix. Now they've got way more concrete than they needed and it's still not quite right. Save yourself the headache.

How to Actually Do It
1. Set up on level ground
Put your wheelbarrow somewhere flat. Measure your water into a bucket ahead of time. This sounds dumb but trust me — if you're holding a hose, you WILL add too much.
2. Dump in the dry mix
Slice the bag open, pour it in, fish out the paper. Nobody wants paper chunks in their concrete.
3. Make a crater
Push the dry mix to one end so you've got a bowl shape. Your water goes in there.
4. Add water slowly
Pour in about 2/3 of your water. Now pull small amounts of dry mix into the water with your hoe or shovel. Don't just flood it — work it in gradually.
5. Keep mixing longer than you think
Here's where patience pays off. Mix for a solid 3-5 minutes after everything looks wet. Concrete is sneaky — it often looks dry at first, then loosens up as you work it. If you add more water too early, you'll overshoot.
Turn the mix. Chop through it. Get in the corners. No dry pockets.
6. The test that actually works
Drag your tool through the mix to make a little trench.
- Sides crumble and fall in? Too dry. Add a cup of water.
- Sides slump and it flows back together? Too wet. Add dry mix if you have it.
- Sides hold their shape with a slight shine? Perfect.
7. Move fast once it's mixed
Clock's ticking. You've got maybe 60-90 minutes before it starts setting up. On a hot day, less.
Mix only what you can pour in 20-30 minutes. Nobody wants to jackhammer concrete out of their wheelbarrow.
Mistakes I've Seen (and Made)
Adding water when the mix gets stiff
Your concrete's been sitting for 20 minutes and now it's getting hard to work. Tempting to add water, right?
Don't. That's called "retempering" and it kills the strength. If it's stiffening up, you waited too long. Work faster next time or mix smaller batches.
Mixing on bare ground
Dry soil or old concrete will suck moisture right out of your mix. Use a wheelbarrow, tub, or at least wet down the surface first.
Ignoring the weather
- Hot day? Concrete sets faster. Smaller batches, work in shade.
- Cold day? Sets slower. Below 50°F it can actually get damaged. Wait or use blankets.
- Windy? Surface dries out and gets weak and crumbly.
Skipping the curing
Mixing is half the job. After you pour, that concrete needs to stay moist for about a week to reach full strength. Cover it, mist it, don't let it dry out fast.
Hand Mix vs. Machine vs. Truck
Hand mixing makes sense for:
- Small stuff (under 10 bags)
- Fence posts, small pads, repairs
- Anything you can knock out in an hour
Rent a mixer when:
- You've got 10-15+ bags
- You need consistent batches
- Your back is complaining
Call for a truck when:
- You're past 30 bags
- Time is money
- You actually did the math and it's cheaper
